Derek Dobson

Derek is a seasoned expert and strategic leader with more than 30 years of pension industry experience. Currently the CEO and Plan Manager of CAAT Pension Plan, one of Canada’s most sustainable and highest performing workplace pension plans, Derek applies expertise in strategic planning, funding, governance and risk management to work with organizations towards achieving their business goals. Under his leadership, CAAT opened its modern defined benefit (DB) pension plan to all industries and has been rapidly growing, now with over 700 employers across Canada.

Derek received the 2023 Institutional Connect Lifetime Achievement Award and 2019 ACPM Industry Award for his creativity in addressing the challenges in Canada’s retirement income system. He continues to advocate passionately for innovative, cost-effective business solutions through efficient, high-performing pensions.

He sat on the Pension Policy Council at C.D. Howe Institute and served on the Board of the Association of Canadian Pension Management (ACPM). He is a featured expert for conferences and media, including BNN Bloomberg, The Globe & Mail, Talent Canada, HR Professional, Plans & Trusts, Benefits Canada, and Canadian HR Reporter.
